Frequently Asked Questions

  • ANY age can be the right age, so long as the learning is developmentally appropriate. The best age to start is when the child is excited to play, and developmentally ready to learn. This will be different for every child, but in my experience, most children are ready to start learning piano around age 5-6.

  • If your child is able to read and write the letters A B C D E F G, as well as read and write the numbers 1 2 3 4 5, and can work independently for 2-3 minutes at a time, then they are most likely ready for lessons! I am also happy to assess your child in an introductory lesson.

  • Tuition is an annual rate for the entire year, and includes core materials, as well as recitals. See the studio tuition agreement for current pricing.

  • Yes! The best keyboards have 88 keys and what is called “weighted action.” As you progress you will likely want to get a better instrument – but we can cross that bridge when we come to it! If budget is an issue, I can often help you find a quality used instrument. Click here for more information on choosing a piano.

  • Regular practice is an important part of making steady progress, however, there are no set practice requirements. Guidelines are given, but you need to decide what is reasonable for your family, considering such things as amount of homework, other extra-curricular and family commitments, and the student’s musical goals.

  • Each student has a reserved lesson time once per week, with the exception of holiday and vacation weeks.

  • The studio is open Monday-Friday, and most lessons fall between the hours of 3:00-8:00pm. Daytime hours are also available.

  • The studio address is 4721 Bonner Dr., Suite 103. Only 15 minutes from downtown, and 20 minutes to the island, the Studio is just minutes from the Everhart exit off S.P.I.D.

  • If you have an unavoidable absence, you have the option of scheduling an online or video lesson, or rescheduling for another day/time (availability is not guaranteed).

  • The number one goal of piano students everywhere is to be able to play the music they know and love! This is why I do not insist on a teacher-based curriculum. In addition to learning basic fundamentals, students can learn any style that appeals to them - whether it’s rock, pop, jazz, country, blues, or classical!

  • The first step towards getting started in lessons is to schedule an introductory lesson. During this first lesson, we start with some basic facts, and then learn 2-3 songs. You will be excited to see how quickly and easily you can learn! This lesson is also an opportunity for you to meet me, see the studio, and make sure we are going to be a good fit for each other, as well as go over any questions you might have regarding lessons.
